The numbers in the register are a snapshot

The question of whether the intensive care beds for the care of Covid 19 patients in the region are becoming scarce is currently moving many people. At the weekend it was said that there were only 300 beds available in all of Bavaria. According to the Germany-wide DIVI register (German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine), not a single intensive care bed in Würzburg should have been free. The situation is different on Monday after a survey in Würzburg, Ochsenfurt and Lohr.

“We have been very busy in intensive care over the last few weeks,” says Dr. Matthias Held, Medical Director at Klinikum Würzburg Mitte, “I can confirm for our two locations, Juliusspital and Missio Klinik: We still have intensive therapy capacity including ventilation therapy – both for Covid and non-Corona patients.”

Then why was it said that there were no more intensive care beds in Würzburg? Held points out that the situation in intensive care units is dynamic. “What is at 8 o’clock in the morning can be outdated by 12 o’clock.” But the numbers are only reported to the intensive care register in the morning. Any changes that occur during the day are not reported afterwards, but are only registered again the next day. So the numbers are just a snapshot.

In addition, according to Held, not only Covid patients are cared for in intensive care units. “There are also emergencies that can be dealt with much more quickly, such as arrhythmia or respiratory impairment in the case of less serious infections than those with the Covid virus,” explains the lung specialist.

Free beds in Ochsenfurt and Lohr

Held’s colleague at the Main Clinic in Ochsenfurt, the Medical Director Dr. Joachim Stenzel, informed on request that a Covid patient will be treated intensively on Monday – for a long time. “It is by no means the case that we are overcrowded,” said Stenzel. If necessary, four to six patients could receive intensive care in the Main Clinic. In addition, the Main Clinic via its pandemic officer, Dr. Manfred Knof, chief physician in the department for anesthesia and intensive care medicine, is in contact with other clinics and could respond to emergencies.

From the Main-Spessart Clinic in Lohr it is said: “At the moment we have a bottleneck in the beds in normal wards due to illnesses among the nursing staff,” informs Dr. Kilian Distler, Head of Internal Medicine II – Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine. However, intensive care beds are available. “We could take in at least two patients ad hoc.” At the weekend, however, there was a freeze on admissions for corona patients – because of the failures among the nursing staff. Now the situation has relaxed again.
