However, due to the downturn in the construction industry, the number of people employed in the construction industry has decreased by the most since 2013.

Yes, Statistics Korea announced ‘July employment trends’.

The number of workers last month was 28.857 million, an increase of 172,000 from the same month last year.

The increase in employment was 80,000 and 96,000 in May and June, respectively, falling below 100,000 for two consecutive months, but getting back to the 100,000 level again in three months.

The number of older people is driving the labor market, while the number of young people employed is decreasing.

The number of employed people in their 60s and over increased by 278,000, but the number of employed young people between 15 and 29 decreased by 149,000.

By industry, employment increased in the health and social welfare services, information and communication industries, and transportation and warehousing industries, while construction and wholesale and retail industries continued to decline.

In particular, due to the sluggish construction economy, the decline in employment in the construction industry was the largest since the industry classification was changed in 2013.

The number of people working in manufacturing, which had increased for seven months, also decreased by 11,000 people.

By employment status, among wage earners, the number of regular workers increased by 96,000 and the number of temporary workers increased by 227,000, but the number of daily workers decreased by 71,000.

Among non-wage workers, the number of self-employed people with employees increased by 48,000, but the number of small self-employed people without employees decreased by 110,000.

The employment rate for those aged 15 and over was 63.3%, up 0.1 percentage points (p) from a year ago and showing the highest figure since July since related statistics were compiled in 1982.

The number of unemployed people was 737,000, a decrease of 70,000 from the same month last year, and the unemployment rate also fell by 0.2 percentage points to 2.5%.
