At least 18 people were killed and 92 others wounded in the Israeli strike in central Beirut, two Lebanese security sources said.
The attack took place in the heart of the Lebanese capital, which has rarely been hit since the war between Israel and Hezbollah broke out. The Israeli Air Force is mainly focused on the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Shiite group’s stronghold.
The strike in the districts of Ras al-Nabeh and Nuweiri is the third in the capital since September 23.
According to a source close to the Lebanese security services, the Israeli strike targeted “at least” one Hezbollah operative. It is not clear which person this is
Eyewitnesses who spoke to Reuters said one of the bombings happened next to a gas station. A large fire raged in the background as rescuers, flashlights in hand, searched the rubble for survivors, according to footage broadcast by Hezbollah’s al-Manar channel.
There is currently no announcement from the Israeli army about this attack. Earlier it issued a new evacuation order for the southern suburbs of Beirut, for specific buildings.
An AFP reporter said she heard three explosions and saw thick black smoke billowing over the city.
