ANNOUNCEMENTS

The number of vacancies in the healthcare sector has increased again, reports Statistics Netherlands. In the third quarter, nursing and care institutions had 67,000 vacancies, more than 16,000 more than a year earlier.

Compared to the second quarter there was a slight increase of about 700 units. In total, about 1.5 million people work in the health sector.

The number of vacancies is now more than double what it was at the beginning of 2018. However, there hasn’t always been an upward trend. In the first and second quarters of 2020, when the coronavirus crisis began, hiring decreased slightly. Subsequently, the number of vacancies started to slowly increase again and has been increasing rapidly since the second quarter of 2021.

The majority of vacancies, 21,700, are in aged care and home care. This is the largest sector within the healthcare sector. Relatively speaking (in relation to the number of employees), the number of job vacancies has been the highest in mental health care for years.

Transport

Statistics Netherlands has also published data on vacancies in the transport sector. Even there, an upward trend is still visible.

Transportation companies had 21,900 vacancies for which they had yet to find none in the third quarter, nearly 5,000 more than a year earlier. It is the highest number since Statistics Netherlands started collecting this data in 1997.
