The Number of Unemployed in Hesse Rises Slightly in June due to Economic Uncertainties

The number of unemployed in Hesse rose slightly in June. According to the regional directorate, many companies are still unsettled and reluctant to hire because of the war.

The economic uncertainties were reflected in the Hessian labor market in June. The number of unemployed as of June 13 was 178,620, as the regional directorate of the employment agency announced on Friday. That was a good 500 more (plus 0.3 percent) than in May with 178,071 unemployed. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.1 percent.

In large cities such as Frankfurt, Offenbach, Kassel and Wiesbaden in particular, the unemployment rate is slightly above average, in the other regions it is below average, said Frank Martin, Managing Director of the Hesse Regional Directorate.

A year ago fewer unemployed

Most recently, the willingness of companies to hire had declined. Regarding the June figures, Martin said that companies were increasingly reluctant to hire staff. “This is also shown by the fact that a year ago in June there were about 2,000 fewer unemployed than now.”

Because of the Ukraine crisis combined with high prices, companies are unsure about what the future will bring. In principle, this applies to all sectors. However, gastronomy and the hotel industry still have some catching up to do after suffering particularly badly from Corona. More will be hired in these areas than elsewhere.

Director Martin also expected the number of unemployed to rise in the coming months. On the one hand, companies are hiring fewer people in the summer months and, on the other hand, more refugees from Ukraine are entering the labor market after language courses.
