The number of TB deaths worldwide has increased by 14 percent in two years

The number of TB deaths worldwide has increased by 14% in two years. According to a World Health Organization report on tuberculosis released Thursday in Geneva, an estimated 1.6 million people will die from the disease by 2021. In 2019, there were 1.4 million deaths. The increase was the opposite of the trend, as the number of deaths decreased between 2005 and 2019.

The World Health Organization said the reason for the increase was the Corona pandemic. This has a significant impact on the prognosis and treatment options for tuberculosis. And four countries have recorded the highest number of deaths, according to the WHO report: India, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines. In total, it is estimated that by 2021, 10.6 million people will be diagnosed with tuberculosis. This equates to a 4.5% increase in one year.

Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that usually infect the lungs. Just like the corona virus, this disease is transmitted through the air, for example through coughing. During the Corona pandemic, tuberculosis was replaced by Covid-19 as the most common cause of death worldwide.
