More than 2.3 million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24, according to UN figures released on Thursday.

According to the UNHCR website, 2,316,002 people have fled Ukraine, 160,731 more than in a previous release released on Wednesday.

“UNHCR needs about $ 500 million in emergency aid to Ukraine and its neighbors,” Philippe Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said on Twitter today.

“To date, we have received more than $ 300 million, of which nearly $ 200 million from individuals, businesses and foundations,” said Grandi.

“This is an unprecedented situation: a sign of extraordinary solidarity,” he added.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday that Ukrainian refugees include 109,000 third-country nationals, including people from Ecuador, Ghana, Lebanon and Tunisia.

The UN expects the number of refugees to continue to rise sharply as Russian troops move deeper into Ukraine, especially as Kiev approaches.

Before the Russian invasion, more than 37 million people lived in the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government.

An unknown number of people have also been forced to move around Ukraine due to the war.

60% of refugees have fled to Poland, where there are currently 1,412,503 refugees, according to UNHCR. The Polish government has set up refugee reception centers and charities have mobilized to provide support to refugees. 1.5 million Ukrainians who already lived in Poland before the war are also providing active support.

The Polish Border Guard reported today that 140,000 people have crossed the border in the opposite direction to the flow of refugees since the invasion began. They mostly fall into three categories. These are Ukrainians working in Poland who are returning to their country to join the army and fight the invader. Migrant workers going to care for relatives left in Ukraine and refugees who have recently returned to Poland for family reasons.

Some 258,844 refugees in Ukraine’s neighboring countries have already moved on to other European countries, according to UNHCR.

There are currently 214,160 refugees in Hungary, representing about 9% of the total number of refugees. Hungary has five border crossings with Ukraine and several border towns have turned government buildings into aid centers for refugees.

About 165,199 refugees crossed the Ukrainian border with Slovakia.

Meanwhile, 97,098 people crossed Ukraine’s border with Russia, and another 96,000 crossed the Donbass border with Russia in the five days before the war.

There are currently 84,671 refugees from Ukraine in Romania and 82,762 in Moldova, according to data collected up to Sunday. It is estimated that many thousands more people have crossed into Moldova on their way to other countries.

By Sunday evening, Moldova had taken in 259,000 refugees from Ukraine, including 230,000 Ukrainians.
