In the corona pandemic, the prisons are in the metropolis New York as empty as it has been for more than 70 years. The number of prison inmates fell to below 4,000 in the past week – the lowest level since the 1940s, said Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday.
2,000 layoffs
This is mainly due to the city’s strategy, suitable prisoners out of concern for the health of the inmates and against a further spread of the Virus to dismiss earlier. More than 2,000 inmates have been released since mid-March. Around 600 people have been arrested since then – in the same period last year there were around 3,300.
USA: Highest prison rate in the world
As recently as 2014, more than 11,000 people were in New York’s prisons. Overall, they have USA with around 2.3 million prisoners the highest prison rate in the world. Several states have already taken measures similar to those of the metropolis in the corona crisis New York considered or implemented.
