The number of new cases of COVID-19 in Greece breaks all records, and the Omicron variant already accounts for nearly 70 percent of new infections in the Attica region, where the Greek capital Athens is located, Health Minister Thanos Plevris told state television ERT.
A record 9,284 new cases were registered in Greece on Monday, but Pleuris said the number is expected to exceed 15,000 today.
He said the possibility of imposing new restrictive measures against the spread of the epidemic earlier than expected was open. “We want to see today’s and tomorrow’s cases,” the minister said.
Yesterday, the Greek government tightened the austerity measures it had imposed before Christmas by limiting the opening hours of bars and restaurants and the number of people allowed to gather at various events. A new meeting of the coronavirus expert commission is scheduled for tomorrow to discuss the situation.
