The number of new Covid-19 cases worldwide has fallen by a fifth in a week

The Covid-19 pandemic continued to decline over the past week, with deaths and infections falling in almost all regions, according to data compiled by AFP.


After a three-and-a-half-month increase in new cases of Covid-19, the global average number of new cases has fallen for the third week in a row, down 22% to 1.97 million, AFP estimates compiled on Thursday.

Over the past seven days, the situation has improved in most regions.

The number of new cases registered during the day fell by 43% in the United States and Canada, by 35% in the Middle East, by 23% in Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and by 22% in Africa.

The situation remains stable in Asia, where the decline is 1%. The increase was 1% in Oceania.

The largest increases in the number of new cases have been in the countries and territories of South-East Asia and Oceania.

New Zealand had the largest increase of 239%. Hong Kong (192%), Malaysia (111%), Vietnam (78%) and South Korea (66%) follow.

The largest decrease in the number of new cases was in Sweden – by 78%. Kazakhstan (59%), Kosovo (57%), Colombia (55%) and Suriname (54%) follow.

Russia has overtaken the United States as the country with the highest number of new cases, with an average of 187,000 new infections per day. This is an increase of 6%.

The United States fell to third place with 119,600 cases a day, a decrease of 44%, well behind Germany with 180,900 cases. In Germany, the decline is 6%.

In proportion to the population, Denmark has the highest increase in the number of new cases per week, with 5026 cases per 100 000 population. Latvia follows with 3635 cases, the Netherlands (2877), Georgia (2851) and Estonia (2777).

The number of Covid-19-related deaths worldwide has fallen by 7% to an average of 10,355 per day. This figure rose for five weeks in a row.

The highest number of deaths this week was in the United States – an average of 2,300 per day. The next places are Brazil (841) and Russia (726).

The Balkans and the Caucasus had the highest proportion of Covid-19-related deaths in proportion to the population. Bosnia and Bulgaria had nine deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Croatia (8.5), Georgia (8.1) and northern Macedonia (7.9).
