In the first two months of this year, a drop in new car sales of 26.3% was registered in Latvia, which is 4.6% more than the EU average. In total, 2,067 new cars were sold in Latvia during this period, compared to 2,803 a year earlier. In total, new car sales in Latvia decreased by 25.8% in 2020: last year, 13,864 cars were sold in Latvia, while in 2019 – 18,692.

The worst situation in the first two months of the year in new car sales among the Baltic States was in Lithuania: if 8492 new cars were sold in the first two months of 2020, then in the same period this year this figure was only 4541, which is 46.5% less than a year earlier . This is one of the biggest declines in car sales in the EU. Lithuania is ahead of only Portugal in this respect, where new car sales fell by 47.1% at the beginning of this year. In total, slightly more than 40 thousand cars were purchased in Lithuania last year, but in 2019 – 46 thousand, sales in 2020 decreased by 12.9%.

Meanwhile, 3,612 new cars were sold in Estonia in the first two months of 2021, which is 8.8% less than in the same period in 2020 (3,962 cars). In 2020 as a whole, compared to the situation in 2019, new car sales decreased by as much as 29.5% – last year 18,750 cars were sold, while a year earlier – more than 26,000. At the same time, the new car market in Estonia is currently showing signs of recovery and overall sales in 2021 could improve, analysts at RIA.com Marketplaces predict.

Of all the EU countries, car sales only increased in Sweden at the beginning of this year. In the first two months, 12.8% more cars were sold there than in the same period in 2019. It is worth noting that in 2020, the total volume of cars sold in Sweden decreased by 18% to 292 thousand cars, although in 2019 this figure was 356 thousand units.

The smallest decline in new car sales among EU countries was recorded in Hungary (-6.8%), Finland (-8.0%), Estonia (-8.8%) and Poland (-10.2%). The sharpest decline was in Portugal (-47.1%), Lithuania (-46.5%), Spain (-44.6%) and Denmark (-40.1%).

For comparison: in the first two months of this year, 13.6% fewer new cars were sold to the Baltic States in nearby Ukraine than last year. However, at the beginning of last year, a sharp increase in sales of new cars was registered in Ukraine – in January 2020, sales increased by 35%, and in February – by 20% (compared to the same period in 2019).

In general, last year in Ukraine sold only 3.7% fewer new cars than a year earlier. However, analysts at RIA.com Marketplaces point out that used cars account for an unusually large share of the car market in Ukraine. “If in the first two months of 2021 a little more than 12 thousand new cars were bought, then there are even several times more used cars. In the first two months of this year, more than 54 thousand used cars were re-registered in Ukraine. In the USA, “says Artyom Umanets, the Estonian representative of RIA.com Marketplaces.
