Emma Vikströmmusic editor at Spotify, tells SVT Culture that new genres appear daily and that users’ listening behavior influences which genres are displayed.
– There are any number of users who listen to music that I, as a music editor, do not, but then their listening behavior enters our data, and this allows us to show more genres to more users.
Vikström believes that streaming and increased accessibility are behind the phenomenon.
– Artists are inspired by others to get out of the noise of all the endless music that is released today, she says and explains that a shift has also taken place in the listener’s identification pattern.
– In the past you were a popper, today you are, for example, a “swiftie”.
