As part of its 2.0 strategy, IONITY is expanding its plans to further expand its network of high-performance charging stations in Europe. The number of charging stations is expected to increase from 400 to more than 1,000 by 2025, the company said in a statement.
IONITY already operates Europe’s largest network of high-performance charging stations, available for most electric cars. By increasing the number of stations, the company will provide about 7,000 recharging points, more than quadrupling from the current 1,500.
Most recently, in the middle of October 2021, IONITY opened its first high-speed electric car charging station in Latvia in Ādaži, offering the possibility to charge two electric cars with a capacity of up to 350 kW at the same time. So far, this is the only planned IONITY station in Latvia. In neighboring countries, IONITY has opened charging stations in Panevezys, Lithuania and Hämeenlinna, Estonia.
The IONITY network uses the European charging standard – Combined Charging System (CSS). The 800-volt technology in these charging stations means that this network can be used to charge the Porsche Taycan up to a maximum of 270 kW. With the Porsche charging service, Taycan drivers also benefit from a flat price with a significant discount at IONITY fast charging stations – currently € 0.33 per kilowatt hour.
“We are seeing a clear increase in electromobility and the associated expansion of high-performance charging infrastructure. At Porsche, we expect 50% of the world’s cars to be partially or fully electric by 2025, but that proportion will exceed 80% by the end of the decade.” “says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG.
According to Blume, by investing in the IONITY joint venture, Porsche is sending an important signal to customers, further enhancing the convenience and benefits of driving an electric car.
Among the shareholders of IONITY are not only Porsche, but also other major car manufacturers in the world, and the investment company Blackrock is expected to join them soon. Porsche and other shareholders are expected to invest € 700 million in the development of the IONITY network by 2025.
IONITY strategy “2.0”: a wider network that offers more convenience
IONITY charging points will be built not only on European highways, but also near major cities and along busy major roads. These stations will include six to 12 charging points in the future. In addition, existing charging stations on roads where there is a high demand for charging will be expanded with additional charging points.
As part of the Oasis concept, IONITY plans to significantly improve convenience and quality of service. To do this, the company plans to purchase additional plots of land to set up charging parks with catering services and shops.
Porsche charging service with almost 200,000 charging points
The Porsche recharging service allows drivers to recharge their vehicles at stations around the world operated by various operators, including IONITY. Today, almost 200,000 charging points in 20 countries are connected in Europe. Among them are about 6500 charging points with a charging capacity of more than 50 kW DC. Invoicing is done by Porsche. In addition to the IONITY joint venture network, Porsche also plans to set up its own fast charging stations close to Europe’s major transport routes.
With Porsche Destination Charging, customers can charge their electric and plug-in hybrid Porsche models for free at several popular locations. The service currently provides more than 2,700 AC charging points in at least 70 countries, including selected hotels, restaurants, airports, shopping malls, sports and yacht clubs. This network is already being actively expanded.
