The number of dieticians starting their own businesses has been growing for years. According to data from the Chamber of Commerce (KVK), five years ago there were just over twelve hundred and now more than sixteen hundred. This is an increase of over 30 percent.
Yet people who want an appointment with a dietician are faced with waiting lists. According to the Dutch Association of Dietitians (NVD), this is due to the fact that the demand for nutrition consultants is increasing. Furthermore, it is more interesting for the profession to work for itself than within the care sector.
“Some dieticians are opting for a more financially attractive job outside of health care, such as a coach or nutritionist in business,” says NVD director Bianca Rootsaert. This concerns, for example, work in the food industry.
Dietitians can translate their knowledge into foods, according to the NVD. “Also, I am aware of laws and regulations, for example regarding labeling,” says Rootsaert.
