The president of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, Indira Alfonzo Izaguirre, announced that this Tuesday, June 30, the “special rules” that will govern the 2020 parliamentary elections were approved.

According to the authority, the 87 electoral constituencies existing in the country will be preserved, but the number of deputies to be elected to join the National Assembly (AN) during the period 2021-2026 will increase from 167 to 277, an increase of 66 %.

“We are going to elect 110 more deputies. There is diversity, pluralism and participation that awaits us in December 2020, “said the president of the CNE in statements to VTV.

“With the permanent session, we ratify that the election of the deputies to the National Assembly will be allowed for the period 2021-2026, applying the Venezuelan electoral model, endowed with sufficient capacity to satisfy the progressivity and demand of the nation of the principles of pluralism and people’s participation, “he said.

Izaguirre announced that 87 political organizations are empowered to participate in the upcoming elections, for which “any unnecessary obstacle” was removed to “make viable” the participation of these actors in the electoral process.

The president of the electoral entity specified that a balance will also be sought between the list vote and the nominal vote, giving 52% of weight to the proportional vote and 48% to the list vote.

The maximum representative of the Electoral Power announced that it was also approved that the same constituencies are preserved irreducibly for the next parliamentary elections.

On June 17, the Venezuelan National Constituent Assembly (ANC) unanimously repealed the decree that required political parties to sign 0.5% of voters on the electoral registry for legalization.
