After an increase in the number of corona infections and hospital admissions, the number of deaths is now also rising again. This is apparent from the preliminary figures of the health institute Sciensano. Between June 21 and 27, an average of six corona patients died every day, an increase of 17 percent.

In the meantime, 31,918 Belgians have died from Covid-19. Between June 21 and 27, an average of 4,381 people tested positive for the virus every day, an increase of 44 percent.
Between 24 and 30 June, an average of 108.6 people with a corona infection were admitted to hospital (+23 percent) daily. There are 1,352 corona patients in hospital (+25 percent), of whom 75 (+10 percent) are in intensive care.
The positivity ratio is 29.8 percent (+3.1 percent). The reproduction number, which represents the speed at which the virus spreads, does drop to 1.13. If the number is higher than one, that means the pandemic is fueled.
Virologist Steven Van Gucht states that although there is now an increase in the number of patients in intensive care and in deaths, the numbers are relatively low compared to previous waves. He does advise people in fragile health to remain cautious.
Sciensano also reports that the number of cases is rising sharply among the working population. This increase was already noted two weeks ago, but is continuing in many sectors. These include the healthcare sector, aviation and public transport, various production branches and within the government. In these sectors, the incidence is also up to three times higher than in the general population and twice as high as in the working population. It is striking that this trend is not noticeable in non-medical contact professions.
