The number of dead rises to 2,122, and the number of injured to 2,421, due to the earthquake in Morocco

(EFE).- The number of deaths due to Friday’s earthquake in Morocco now amounts to 2,122, and the number of injured is 2,421, according to the latest provisional count by the Moroccan authorities.

The province with the most deaths is Al Haouz, which registered at least 1,351, and the second is Taurudant, where the earthquake has already left 492 deaths, according to an official count released at four in the afternoon local time.

The devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Moroccan region of Marrakesh. It had its epicenter in the town of Ighil, 63 kilometers southwest of the tourist capital of Morocco.

The tragedy has unleashed a movement of solidarity and help from the international community, which has begun to mobilize to collaborate in the search for survivors and in the work of clearing debris.

Rescue teams have begun to deploy, after Morocco has accepted help from four countries: Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

From New Delhi, several leaders who participated in the G20 summit have reiterated to Morocco their willingness to provide “urgent” aid in the short term for reconstruction after the earthquake.

“Together with all our international partners, we support Morocco to provide all necessary support for any urgent short-term financial needs and for reconstruction efforts,” indicated a joint statement published by the EU, within the framework of the meeting that concluded today in the Indian capital.
