The number of daily passengers in the subway exceeds 2 million, almost half of before the pandemic – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – The MTA reached a major milestone this week by reaching a new peak in daily ridership since the New York City pandemic shutdown in March 2020.

New Yorkers took more than 2,009,025 subway trips Thursday, the transit agency announced. Data shows that the number of subway passengers dropped by 90 percent in the weeks after the pandemic shutdown brought the city to a standstill.

The number of riders on the subway system averaged more than 5.5 million every day of the week, according to the MTA, and dropped to 300,000 last April.

The number of bus passengers reached 1,155,405 on April 7, a record level since September last year, when fare collection was resumed.

Traffic officials say it is safe to return to the metro system and are still taking extra precautions to keep all riders healthy.

“Seeing more and more passengers return to the subway system gives everyone in New York a sense of optimism and hope – it’s a return to normalcy,” said New York City Transit Acting President Sarah Feinberg.

Subways are still closed between 2:00 am and 4:00 am for overnight cleaning. There is no information on when or if that schedule will change.
