In Europe, the number of new Covid-19 cases and Covid-19-related deaths is rising again, with Russia, Ukraine and Romania having the highest numbers of Covid-19 victims, according to estimates compiled by AFP on Tuesday.
Last week, 1,672,000 new infections were registered in Europe, an average of 239,000 a day.
Compared to the previous week, the increase is 18%, according to AFP data compiled from official sources in 52 countries and territories of the region.
The number of new Covid-19 cases has increased by 60% between August and September, from an average of 150,000 cases per day.
There has been an increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases in 42 countries in the region over the past week, but it has fallen to just seven.
The largest increases in infections were in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland.
In proportion to the population, the worst situation is in Latvia, Estonia and Georgia.
Kosovo, Luxembourg and Malta have seen the sharpest declines.
However, the current level of infection is below record highs in 2020 from 2 to 8 November, when an average of 284,000 new cases were registered each day.-
Europe currently accounts for 55% of the world’s total number of new cases.
The number of deaths is also rising.
An average of 3,210 Covid-19-related deaths have been reported each day for the past seven days.
This is the first time since May that the number of deaths has exceeded 3,000 a day. True, the current figures lag behind the 5,735 deaths that were recorded every day from January 14 to 20.
More than a third of European deaths are currently recorded in Russia, where an average of 1,051 deaths are recorded every day. Ukraine and Romania follow with 485 and 420 deaths respectively.
