According to data from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, the number of COVID-19 cases worldwide surpassed 80 million on Saturday, reaching precisely 80,070,327, with a total of 1,753,839 deaths worldwide at 12:22 local time (17:22 GMT).
The United States is the country with the highest number of cases and deaths in the world, with 18,794,545 and 330,509 respectively. India follows in second place with 10,169,118 cases. Brazil comes in third place with 7,448,560 cases and the second highest death toll in the world with 190,488.
Countries with more than 2 million cases also include Russia, France, United Kingdom, Turkey and Italy, according to the CSSE tally, while other countries with more than 50,000 deaths are India, Mexico, Italy, United Kingdom, France, Iran and Russia ,.
The number of cases worldwide hit 50 million on November 8, topped 60 million on November 25, and crossed the 70 million mark on December 11. At the same time, it took 17 days for the number of cases worldwide to drop from 50 million to 60 million, 16 days from 60 million to 70 million, and only 15 days from 70 million to 80 million.
The United States remains the hardest hit country, accounting for over 23% of the world’s cases. US experts have also warned that there could be a post-holiday surge given the sheer number of travelers across the country during the Christmas season.
