The number of corona cases is rising again: over 19,000 positive tests | Inland

The number of hospital admissions also increased. Nursing units admitted 501 corona patients, compared to 350 the week before. The number of admissions to intensive care units rose from 53 to 100.

RIVM received 102 reports of deaths in the past week. 51 of them died in the past week. The others died earlier, some already in April, but this has only now been processed in the data of the RIVM. The youngest deceased was 45, the oldest 95.

In last week’s update, RIVM reported 33 deaths, 19 of which had died in the previous week.

Since the start of the outbreak, 117,551 infections have been diagnosed in the Netherlands. That is an increase of 3,011 compared to Monday, the largest increase in 24 hours. The number of infections in Amsterdam-Amstelland increased by 445 in the past 24 hours, including 385 in Amsterdam itself. Rotterdam-Rijnmond registered 424 positive tests, of which 244 in Rotterdam. Haaglanden saw the number of infections increase by 252 and Utrecht by 223.

Reproduction number

The reproduction number, which indicates how quickly the coronavirus is spreading, dropped a tiny bit. It now stands at 1.27. That means that a group of 100 infected people infects about 127 others, who in turn infect about 161 people. In this way, the virus spreads further and faster. Last week the number was 1.33 and the week before that was 1.38. The measures that the cabinet announced on Monday should reduce the reproduction number to 0.9. If the number falls below 1, the corona virus will slowly disappear.

The number of infections is increasing fastest in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Zeeland and South Limburg have the fewest reports. It is still mainly people in their twenties who contract the virus.

Infectious people

The Netherlands has an increasing number of corona patients who can infect others with the virus. According to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), there are now approximately 146,000 contagious people in the Netherlands. Last week there were more than 104,000 and the week before about 95,000.

The number is an estimate, emphasizes the RIVM. Perhaps there are over 96,000 contagious people, but it could also be more than 200,000 people.
