The age group of children most infected with iGAS cases is from 1 to 4 years.

The rise in infections has led to a shortage of medicines in the UK.

As a result, pharmacists are now able to provide alternative forms of penicillin, without patients having to return to their general practitioner when their prescription runs out.

Increase in the number of deaths in a “relatively short period of time”

“To level up iGAS infection in children at the start of the season has led to an increase in the number of deaths in a relatively short time,” the UKHSA said in its latest statement, quoted by Sky News on Thursday (22/12/2022).

This is a spike in cases of dengue fever, which is caused by Strep A bacteria and can cause iGAS in a small number of cases if the bacteria enters the bloodstream.

Figures forecast by the UKHSA suggest that the number of probable reported cases of dengue fever may have reached 10,000 in the week ending last time.

Between 2017 and 2018, there were only 30,768 reports of dengue for the entire year.

The organization said the number of GP consultations in the UK “currently represents a significant level of activity during this start to the season”.

It comes as the number of hospitalized flu patients in England is ‘soaring’ and Strep A is driving ‘near record’ demand for NHS 111 services.

An average of 1,939 people who contracted flu were in hospital each day last week, up 67% from 1,162 the previous week, according to NHS England.

This is also a sharp increase from the daily average of 482 people at the end of November.

There has also been a spike in the number of flu patients in UK intensive care facilities, with the daily average reaching 149 last week, up 72% from 87 the previous week.

At the same time last year, the NHS had just two flu patients a day in intensive care and 32 in public beds.
