The Vatican’s Fides news agency reported that the number of Catholics in Europe had fallen by about 292,000 in 2019. Today, there are more than 285 million Christians in this part of the world, or almost 40% of the population.
However, this decline is being offset by trends elsewhere in the world, with more than 8 million Catholics in Africa and more than 5 million in North and South America.
At the end of 2019, 1.34 billion people, or almost 18% of the total population, considered themselves Catholics in the world. About 414 thousand priests serve in the Catholic Church.
