The number of confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the world has exceeded 40 million, according to official sources compiled by the news agency AFP on Monday.
More than half of these cases occurred in three countries: the United States (8.2 million), India (7.6 million) and Brazil (5.2 million).
In the last seven days, 2.5 million infections have been confirmed worldwide. This is the highest number of confirmed infections in a single week since the outbreak of the Covid-19 epidemic in China at the end of last year, which escalated into a global pandemic.
With Covid-19, more than 1.1 million people have died worldwide.
