Jakarta –
Marcus Rashford make assist for Manchester United when beating Manchester City. But Rashford’s total number of assists this season seems to be confusing!
Man United won 2-0 in the Manchester derby at Man City headquarters at the weekend. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with the penalty spot in the first half and Luke Shaw then solidified the three points with his second half goal.
Luke Shaw’s goal came from goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s throw at Man United’s left-back. Shaw penetrates then passes to Rashford who then returns the ball. Shaw then kicked the round leather into the corner of Ederson’s goal.
Well, the official site Manchester United actually recorded it as his 10th assist from Marcus Rashford in all competitions this season. That is the highest number of assists from him in his career.
What is confusing is that Man United journalist Sam Carney also mentioned that there are references from other sources who say that Marcus Rashford has had more than 10 assists this season. That number could have been reached on February 18th or nine days earlier!
How come?
“That’s because a number of sites, such as Transfermarkt.com, claim that successful penalties (such as Marcus being fouled which led to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty in the 3-1 win over Newcastle) also count as assists,” Carney wrote in his article on Man United’s official website.
Other sources also count passes that hit opponents as assists, as is the ball from Rashford to Fernandes for the opener in the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad, which this is not reflected in Opta’s tally.
Interestingly, Carney also confided in Rashford’s ‘insinuation’ during an interview ahead of West Brom’s opponent on Valentine’s Day. At that time Carney mentioned Marcus Rashford had 16 goals and eight assists, which was immediately questioned by the player Manchester United.
“Looks like you already erased some of my assists! I’m not sure, everyone mentions different numbers but it looks like I’ve made 16 (goals) and 11 (assists), but I played one match at a time.”
