“I apologize to the governments of the United States of America and Colombia and to the victims of the crimes I committed,” Dairo Antonio Usuga, one of the most dangerous Colombian gangsters of all time, expressed at the court hearing with a candor uncharacteristic of global criminals, after hearing the verdict on the 45-year prison sentence. He was known on the streets simply as “Othoniel”.
Authorities have been looking for “Othoniel” for years. Washington offered several million dollars for information that would help capture the drug lord. When Usuga finally fell into the hands of security forces in 2021, then-Colombian President Ivan Duque called it “the most significant blow to drug trafficking this century.” One that can only be compared to the fall of the legendary Pablo Escobar…
Although “Otoniel” never gained the international reputation and recognition that the famous Medellin cartel boss once enjoyed, he was rightly considered one of the most dangerous men in the world.
