The Norwegian royal house: – Don’t do like Denmark

On Tuesday 10 January, the news came that earlier King Constantine of Greece had passed away82 years old.

The former king reigned in Greece from 1964 to 1974, and was married to the sister of Queen Margrethe of Denmark (82), Anne-Marie (76).

The Danish royal family is therefore in deep mourning over the loss of a family member, and according to Danes Picturemagazine Queen Margrethe has chosen to pay tribute to her brother-in-law with a touching gesture.

On Monday, a funeral will be held for the late ex-king in Athens, but Margrethe has chosen to mark the funeral in Denmark as well.

Today you can see the flag at half-mast outside Amalienborg in Copenhagen, where the Danish queen lives.

However, it is not only Denmark that King Constantine had close ties to. The Greek king also had a good relationship with Norway.

However, Dagbladet is informed by the castle’s communications manager, Guri Varpe, that the flag will not be flown at half-mast outside the castle in Oslo today.

According to the royal house’s website there are fixed rules governing which flag is in use at any given time.

It is King Harald who decides whether the flag should be flown at half-mast or not. Both when King Harald’s sister, Princess Ragnhild, and when the Danish queen’s consort Prince Henrik passed away, the flag was flown at half-mast from the Royal Palace balcony.

– King Harald has decided that the flag will be flown at half-mast from the Palace balcony today and the day Prince Henrik is laid to rest. This shows how close the ties are between the two royal families in Denmark and Norway. It is not just a difficult day for the immediate family. Both King Harald and Queen Sonja are probably grieving today over the loss of their friend, Prince Henrik, Se og Hør’s royal reporter Anders Johan Stavseng told Dagbladet at the time.

The exact reason why King Harald does not fly the flag at half-mast for the Greek ex-king is unknown. The daily newspaper have not received an answer from the Palace on Monday morning as to why.

According to Se og Hør’s royal house expert, Caroline Vagle, the Norwegian royal family was good friends with King Constantine and his family.

Konstantin and Anne-Marie’s eldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos (55), and his wife Marie-Chantal (54), are very good friends with the Norwegian crown prince couple. Crown Princess Mette-Marit (49) is, among other things, godfather to Pavlos and Marie-Chantal’s son Odysseas (18). In return, Pavlos is godfather to the crown prince couple’s son, Prince Sverre Magnus (16).

The Crown Prince couple, together with Princess Märtha Louise (51), are present at Monday’s funeral in Athens.
