If the name Robert Eggers is denounced on the poster, then we now know that idiosyncratic, experimental genre cinema is on the horizon. From the puristic, heavily illustrated folklore horror The Witch to the coarse-grained, completely black and white The lighthouse– Sailor’s yarn about two men who drive each other crazy – he always seems to want to surprise with new ideas and techniques.
In the meantime, word has got around in and around Los Angeles that he is one of Hollywood’s young and wild ones. When it came to the lead roles of his third feature film The Nortman to occupy the stars stood in line.
The result is a colorful mix that is popular with big A-listers like Nicole Kidman (The Others) starts talking about European stars like Ralph Ineson (The green knight), Alexander Skarsgård (Stephen Kings The Stand) or Claes Bang (Dracula) is enough and with rather unusual guest stars like the Icelandic pop icon Björk (with her first cinema appearance since Dancer in the Dark) stops. And also for its already in The Witch and The lighthouse tried companions Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe Eggers has roles ready again.

A masterpiece in the making?
Especially True Blood-Star Alexander Skarsgård had to go to his limits, or even far beyond, time and again, as he plays the legendary Norse prince Amletus, who already played William Shakespeare Hamlet inspired.
And as one is used to from Eggers, this rather romantic legend comes in his The Northman a completely new, because rather bloodthirsty and serious note. The fact that none of the usual intrigue games await us is made clear by a description by Ralph Ineson, who in the film for the Corona-related Bill Skarsgård (he gave the dreaded IT IS in Stephen King’s eponymous clown saga):
“I’ve already seen a four-minute montage and was completely off my feet. The relationship between Rob Egger’s own vision and Viking history is unique. It will be a real masterpiece, ”he believes. And that is partly due to a very special film sequence that Ineson could only marvel at:

Alexander Skarsgård becomes known as the “Monster”, theatrical release
“In this one scene he goes [Skarsgård als Amleth] victorious from the fight. He bends down and rips this guy’s throat and entire lower jaw out with his bare hands while he screams to the gods and stands topless – and you think, ‘My God, this is not a bodybuilder, he’s a real actor.’ “
At that moment, Skarsgård would have looked like “some monster.” So here, too, it shines through again, Egger’s gloomy handwriting. Despite (or maybe because of) all the brutality and violence that comes into play in Egger’s story of revenge from the Viking Age is The Northman unusually expensive at $ 110 million.
And there is a reason for that: Due to the settlement in the tenth century, entire settlements had to be built, areas of land brought to life and countless extras and stars dressed and trained in sword fighting or languages. Whether all the effort was worth it and whether Egger’s third project comes as close to a masterpiece as it did last The lighthouse, you can go to the planned Theatrical release answer yourself on April 8, 2022.
