The Northern Sea Route: Putin Emphasizes Increased Efficiency for Goods Transport from the Suez Canal

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is becoming more efficient for transporting goods from the Suez Canal. “The Northern Sea Route is becoming more efficient than the Suez Canal. The economy of cargo movement there is increasing significantly,” said the head of state at a meeting with the winners and mentors of the professional excellence championship.

Putin also noted that the strait is increasingly open to ships at different times of the year, but the icebreaker fleet will be needed for a long time. “Due to climate change, the SMP has been open for quite a long time. Merchant ships already travel on it, although in the fall or closer to spring it is impossible to sail there without support,” the president noted, “But for many decades, a fleet of nuclear icebreakers will probably be needed, and this is hugely competitive an advantage for our country.”

The head of state explained that the nuclear fleet is a competitive advantage in terms of competence development, and the SMP is a competitive advantage from a logistical point of view.

The SMP is the shortest waterway between the European part of Russia and the Far East. The length of the route from Kara Gate to Providence Bay is about 5600 km. The SMP is entirely located within the territorial waters and exclusive economic zone of Russia. When you use it, the delivery time of goods from East Asia to Western Europe can be 40% shorter than alternative routes.
