The North on orange alert for waves-submersion

The coastline of the department was placed on orange vigilance this Friday, November 24 for risks of marine submersion by Météo-France, that of Pas-de-Calais on yellow vigilance for the same reason.

Be careful on the Opal coasts of the dunes of Flanders. The coastline of the Nord department was placed on orange vigilance this Friday, November 24 for waves-submersion by Météo-France, that of Pas-de-Calais on yellow vigilance for the same reason. “The associated north to northwest winds strengthen during the day on Friday over the North Sea, and generate strong waves reaching the coast of the southern North Sea in the evening”said the meteorological service, specifying that the “atmospheric conditions generate a significant rise in sea level”.

“The combination of these high sea levels and strong surges could cause submersion by crossing sea waves or overflows, at the time of high seas on Friday evening, on the vulnerable areas of the coast of the departments placed on orange and yellow vigilance”, adds the bulletin. It is therefore strongly recommended not to walk on the coast this Friday evening.

In the two departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais, the decline continues after two weeks of historic flooding which caused significant damage. The Vigicrues organization has no longer classified any river as orange alert in its bulletin for two days, while the Canche was still causing concern on Wednesday morning. “On the Canche, the levels are still high and the decline is in progress. Overflows remain on the section”writes Vigicrues in its situation update on Thursday afternoon. “On the Lys plain, the receding of the canalized Lys is in progress, still causing localized overflows”further specifies the organization.
