The No-Pants Trend: The Autumn We Will Wear Without Pants

Like all revolutions, this one has not been born from one day to the next, not even from one season to the next. Since the Kardashians decided that pants weren’t necessary, it’s been time for skinny jeans to go extinct not once, but a thousand times and resurrect as many others. This is the chronicle of another announced trend: the autumn that we will wear without pants.

The French are just as good at rioting as they are at finding effective symbols to represent and remember their insurrection. As fashion experts, they often resort to clothing, see, yellow vests or corsets. Mademoiselle Chanel found in the bodice the most obvious and superficial manifestation of her nonconformity against the oppression –literal and metaphorical– that society imposed on the female wardrobe. Many years ago, the Jacobins had already rid themselves of another item of undergarment, underpants, which they identified with the bourgeoisie and the privileged classes. So relevant was that insignificant? wardrobe decision, which the supporters of the Republic went down in history as sans culottes (without pants). A small sample of daily rebellion, a great milestone for the Revolution.

Centuries later, fashion is immersed in another revolution, not so much French as global, and in the opposite direction: from top to bottom. From the exclusive catwalks of Chanel, Prada or Max Mara, the first to embrace the no-pants trend that the Kardashians postulated, to the street. Or that is what remains to be seen.

In another renewed effort to shake even the most basic pillars of the wardrobe and deconstruct our way of dressing to its foundations to deprive it of gender (the “they wear pants” thing is over), trends have found another formula to resignify both nudity and underwear. Hence, going out without pants seems like a gesture as revolutionary as going sans culottes. The question is, will we dare?
