Enthusiasts can now study the artwork in great detail from a distance. But the photo is said to be primarily intended to facilitate the work of researchers and restorers.
Katrien Keune is like head Science responsible for the scientific part of the research into The Night Watch. She told the NOS that we now “every pigment particle can see in all the craquelure (small tears, ed.)”
“But we also want to preserve the Night Watch for future generations. This is a detailed snapshot with which we can see how things change in the long term. We can now compare in 10 or 20 years’ time: is the painting still in the same condition, has something changed and should we do something about it?”
