From April this year, the technology company “Wolt” started a 24-hour service in all Baltic capitals – Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius. According to the data collected by the company, during the night hours, the residents of Riga stand out among their Baltic neighbors with their desire for ice cream and flowers, as well as by purchasing pregnancy tests.
On the other hand, residents and guests of the capitals of all the Baltic States are fond of fast snacks – pizzas, kebabs, burgers and french fries – between midnight and eight in the morning.
“More than a year ago, we invited our cooperation partners – restaurants and retail stores – to review their working hours, because we observed a significant increase in the number of orders late at night. The lifestyle of modern society and flexible working hours are changing rapidly, which also forces various service providers, caterers and traders to adapt Currently, there are thousands of people in Riga for whom the night hours are the most convenient time to make larger or smaller purchases. Also, it is often at night that the need for essential goods and, as can be seen from the most frequent orders, also for important and even life-changing purchases, is therefore great, if you can get what you need right when it’s relevant,” explains Mantas Lomsargis, acting manager of Wolt in the Baltics.
From “Netflix & Chill” to pregnancy tests
According to M. Lomsargis, the differences between Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius “Wolt” users can be seen in night orders from retail stores. While in Tallinn the most popular at night are water, energy drinks, milk, as well as various salty snacks and chips, in Riga, ice cream, various pastries, flowers, as well as goods from pharmacies – pregnancy tests, various ointments and a hematogen bar are most often ordered.
“Latvians are happy to buy various types of ice cream and flowers even after midnight. In addition, one of the most frequently ordered products is Ben & Jerry’s Netflix & Chill ice cream, which once again proves that Latvians are not only romantics, but also big movie fans. We are pleased that our cooperation partner Mēness Aptieka also currently offers to buy various types of goods around the clock, thus making our customers’ everyday life easier,” adds M. Lomsargis about the most frequent night choices from retailers in Riga.
Kebabs, pizzas and burgers dominate the top of fast snacks
Although night-time purchases from retail stores differ among the residents of the Baltic countries, various fast snacks such as pizza, kebabs, cheeseburgers and French fries remain on the list of the most requested meals. The favorite choice of night food for residents and guests of Riga and Tallinn is various types of burgers, kebabs and pizzas, but residents of Vilnius also enjoy deep-fried dumplings.
Currently, in Riga, meals and various types of goods can be ordered from more than 25 different restaurants and retail stores around the clock, but considering the high demand, it is estimated that the number of companies will continue to grow.
