When the UN and others rank the world’s poorest country, Niger always comes out poorly. As a rule, the African country is at the very bottom of such lists. Neighbors Mali and Nigeria have a major problem with Islamist terrorism. It often spreads across the border into Niger.
In other words, there is a long way to go between the good news from Niger. As a rule, the country has received attention after coups or coup attempts. President Issoufou breaks that tradition.
