Even Snow Crash comes in a series. But if you look at the reviews of the GITS film… no, it is more accessible than ever but it is a niche and will remain so. That is inherent to punk, to counterculture. It doesn’t matter whether it’s cyberpunk, steampunk, solarpunk. They will remain niche subgenres of science fiction.
