Despite the slow expansion of the cycle path network, the cycle boom in Linz continues unbroken: At the Nibelungenbrücke wheel counting station, the 750,000 mark was exceeded for the first time last year – that is 57% more since 2013. This year, too, a new record is likely to be achieved, in June 2021 there was the strongest month since the counts began, with over 91,000 cyclists counted – that’s over 3,000 (!) Per day. Now there is also a counting point on the railway bridge. Nevertheless, the proportion of cyclists can still be expanded. In Salzburg and Graz it is 20%, in Linz 8,1%.
Salzburg has left Linz far behind when it comes to the proportion of cyclists. In 2012, the Linz municipal council unanimously decided to increase the proportion of cycling to “at least 15 percent” by 2020. The last available evaluation showed a mere 8.1 percent, while in Salzburg it is 20 percent. Graz, which is often compared to Linz, is also worlds ahead of Linz with 19.3 percent of cyclists.
750,000 mark cracked
But the absolute numbers are increasing considerably: 751,490 cyclists were counted at the bike counting station on the Nibelungen Bridge in 2020 – that is an annual average of 2,059 per day. This topped the record year 2019 (745,598) again. In 2013 there were “only” 477,475 cyclists. By mid-2021 there was another plus of around 15,000, a new record seems possible.
More and more people from Linz are cycling in winter too. In order to give these cyclists more safety in wintry conditions, a start was made last winter to give priority to clearing main cycle routes that are particularly heavily used when it is snowing. The Linz winter service looks after almost 1,300 kilometers of lane on lanes and approx. 200 km on cycle paths and sidewalks.
