In the last minute of the third period, Victor Olofsson hit the target and helped his club to tie the game. This success was canceled, however, as it was ruled that there was an offside on the streak.
The NHL refuted the matter on Saturday in a statement. In it, Vice President Colin Campbell explains that the original decision, that it was a goal, should have stood because the video replay “could not determine with certainty” that the Sabers were in an offside position.
“In cases where the video replay cannot definitively determine a game, the league’s policy is to stay with the initial decision on the ice,” added the tour leader.
The loss to the “Blueshirts” was the Sabers’ sixth in a row, who have only experienced the happiness of victory three times in their last 20 outings.
After the controversial end of the game, head coach Don Granato seemed to want to contain his emotions.
“I can’t afford to be emotional over that. I can’t even think about it. There are things that are beyond my control. You have to tell yourself that the league knows what it’s doing and move on, ”he said at a press conference.
