Motorcycles tricycles, called “Ngalanka”, imported from Asia, are now numerous in Senegalese cities. Are they replacing the carts?


Like the “jakarta taxi” in Thiès, Kaolack or Tambacounda, motorcycles tricycles have burst into Senegalese cities. KTM brand, imported from Asia, they offer freight transport services, garbage collection and disposal, transport of construction materials, fruit, rice or water cans.

They are able to perform all the functions that Senegalese carts usually do. They have become a real transport tool in urban areas and weave their way through traffic jams alongside yellow and black taxis.

In addition to being fast and flexible, they are available at all times. They are paid by task and the activity generates significant income. According to the drivers interviewed, the daily earnings vary from 5,000 to 25,000 FCFA, or even more. This is what today pushes many drivers (mostly Peulh Fouta) to want to become owners.
