The NFL’s Success in London and Expansion to New Markets

Since the NFL decided to bring regular season games to London, the response from the island’s public has been the best; the teams that cross the pond usually play in front of packed stadiums. The success has reached such a degree that the league now plays games in various cities in Germany and is exploring new markets, according to reports.

Just on Sunday when the NFL played for the third consecutive weekend in the capital of the United Kingdom, news emerged that the league is considering the possibility of one day bringing the Super Bowl to English soil. “It’s not impossible and it’s something that’s been discussed before,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said at a fan forum in London last week.

Although the idea has always been to bring the big game to cities that are home to a franchise, the option is contemplated to continue growing a market that is huge outside the United States. On other occasions, having a franchise beyond American borders has also been discussed, for example, the Jaguars have been linked to London.

Obviously, hosting a Super Bowl on the other side of the world represents a logistical challenge, especially due to the time difference. It should also be considered that fans must travel there and that it is normally an event that lasts two weeks. This is not to mention the stay of the participating teams in a city at the other end of the Atlantic.

“I think it is not ruled out. But at the end of the day, I think now our formula will remain the same about playing (Super Bowls) in cities that have franchises,” stressed the commissioner of the most powerful league in the world.

When was the first NFL game played in London?

The NFL first played a regular season game in London more than 15 years ago. On October 28, 2007, the New York Giants beat the Miami Dolphins 13-10 in a weak game at the legendary Wembley Stadium.
