When The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first came out, certain quests rewarded you with a sword that was supposed to be great, but by the time you got it, you probably already had a better one. The most striking case occurred in the “Brothers in Arms” quest on Skellige, which ended with Crach an Craite bequeathing the sword “Winter’s Blade” to Geralt.
This sword was supposed to be forged in dragon fire and was so legendary that even Geralt had heard of it. All this backstory for the sword to be so useless was a crime.
However, CD Projekt RED has completely changed this situation in the updated version. Blade of Winter now has a trait befitting a legendary sword. The blade will scale with Geralt, meaning it will always be refreshed. This is what makes the sword truly useful, and not just a piece of junk that you look at after research, and then hang on your wall in Toussaint forever.
It also makes the Crash an Craite mission more worth completing as soon as possible, because you know the reward will actually help you on your journey.
