The IOC board approved Brisbane on Thursday as the only candidate to host the games. On 21 July, 102 IOC members will vote on whether to entrust the organization of the Games to Brisbane.
Brisbane was given priority in the negotiations for the Games in February. In 2019, the IOC decided that some cities could give preference to negotiating games in order to avoid situations where other potential organizers spend huge sums of money on their candidacies.
If nominated at the IOC session, Brisbane will be Australia’s third city to host the Olympics. Doha, Budapest, Jakarta, New Delhi, Istanbul, St. Petersburg, as well as the Chinese cities of Chengdu and Chongqing were also mentioned as candidates for the Games.
Queensland’s candidacy will include cities in the south-east, but most of the competition is scheduled for Brisbane and Gold Coast.
It was estimated that in May last year, the 2032 Olympics would cost 5.3 billion Australian dollars (3.2 billion euros), but it should be noted that initial estimates are usually low and cost much more.
In Australia, the Summer Olympics took place twice – in 1956 in Melbourne and in 2000 in Sydney.
