The next game from the DayZ creator is no longer free to play

Exactly one year has passed since DayZ Dad Dean Hall unveiled his next survival game, Icarus. On Sunday, the game was back on the PC Gaming Show, with both a new trailer and release date.

As the trailer above tells, Icarus will hit Steam on PC on August 11th. The game is admittedly no longer free, a decision that according to Hall was made to avoid the dangers of the “free to play” model.

– We did not want the business model to get in the way of the gaming experience. We also heard clearly from our fans that they wanted to avoid the dangers of “free to play”. We want Icarus to develop over time as a living game, which always gets new challenges and modes. We believe that regular chapters and content updates are a good way to deliver it, Hall said in a press release.

Icarus costs you 186 kroner with a current discount of ten percent. For the Deluxe package with the game’s first two expansions included, you have to pay 621 kroner.

Time-limited voyage of discovery

In Icarus, players visit an alien planet, where the goal is to extract various exotic materials and get away as quickly as possible. You choose assignments that must be performed within a given time – anywhere from half an hour to two days in real time. If you fix the steak, it is back to the mother ship to upgrade equipment and capabilities. If, on the other hand, you run out of time, your figure and all progress will be lost forever.

During the unveiling last year, Hall said that the game should offer the same experience as the first hour in DayZ or Minecraft – where you start empty-handed and quickly have to figure out how to survive. Icarus can be played alone or in groups of up to eight players.
