Xiaomi’s Redmi series of cheap mobiles is in its tenth generation and despite the fact that we are only entering the year early, we have already seen the Note 10 units launched. But now the brand seems to have decided to turn back the clock for its next release, which looks to be an upgraded version of the Redmi Note 8 from 2019.
After several weeks of rumors, Xiaomi has officially announced the new Redmi Note 8 2021 via its Twitter-konto and they have also confirmed some of the specifications of the mobile. We will probably see a formal presentation in the coming weeks.
We know that the phone will have a 48 MP main camera, a MediaTek Helio G85 chipset and a 6.3 inch screen that will have a teardrop-shaped flap. The latter feels quite old-fashioned, as basically every Redmi device chooses to run on screen holes nowadays.
These specifications are the same as the older version except for the chipset, as the model from 2019 used a Snapdragon 665 chipset. We assume that the Helio chipset provides better processing power, otherwise the decision from Xiaomi’s side would have been rather strange, but we will simply have to wait and see.
Why Redmi Note 8?
The Redmi Note 8 was a huge hit for Xiaomi, with official sales figures reaching over 25 million units sold around the world. This is a huge number and is higher than for subsequent Redmi mobiles.
Xiaomi may want to try to pull in a little more money on the phone’s nominal value or simply want to give users a new, upgraded version of the popular mobile that is now two years old.
The model from 2019 was a powerful device at a really cheap price, but in the last two years a lot has changed in the market of cheap mobiles, so it will be exciting to see if Note 8 manages to hit right twice.
But it still feels like a strange decision on Xiaomi’s part to literally call the new phone “Redmi Note 8 2021”, when it comes out with Note 10 devices. One would think that the company would choose to market it as a version of Note 10, or as Redmi Note 11. But we may get an official explanation for this at the launch event of Note 8 2021.
