The current generation of the BMW 5 Series is due to end in 2023 after seven years on the market, Autocar writes, adding that its successor will be different. It is to follow in the footsteps of the 4 and X3 series in that it offers combustion, hybrid and purely electric variants.
–
The latter, however, is not intended to replace the top version of the M5, as one would expect. It is supposed to attack directly the planned Mercedes-AMG with the designation 63 by being a plug-in hybrid. The British cite Klaus Fröhlich, BMW’s head of development, who said that by 2025 there will be no fully electric “emka”, but plug-in hybrids will.
–
It should be noted, however, that if the new “five” in the civilian version is to come sometime in 2023, waiting for the M5 for two years would not be abnormal. And we have known for at least two years that BMW has been working on a high-performance electric car when it unveiled a concept called “Power BEV”. It was the then Class 5 G30 with electric propulsion system, which gave 721 horsepower and 1150 Nm
–
But back to the vision of a plug-in hybrid future for the M5. The British speculate that such a car could share the propulsion system with the allegedly planned X8 M SUV, which could mean a supercharged eight-cylinder S63 with about two hundred horsepower electric assistance. The combined power could be around 760 horses.

Such an arrangement would still leave room for the real top of the range of the 5 Series to be electric – in the form of a car called the i5 M. The CLAR platform, on which the current “five” stands and will use the future one, allows axle install two electric motors and on the front one with a total combined power of 810 hp.

With such performance, BMW could boldly compete with the most powerful Tesla and Porsche Taycan. If he offers it, however, he is in the stars.
–
More civilian variants of the new “five” are to stick to the combustion four and six cylinders; whether the M550i version will survive is a question. The electric version, probably called the i5, will probably offer similar power levels as the already introduced i4, ie rear or all-wheel drive, power from 340 to 543 hp and a range of up to 560 km on a single charge.
