The next Audi A4 is to change its designation, it will remain with internal combustion engines – News

The new generation Audi A4 should be unveiled later this year. Not much information is known about her yet, British magazine AutoExpress however, it brings some, albeit unconfirmed.

The most important one is that the A4 sedan and station wagon will be called A5 from the next generation, as well as the coupe, cabrio and sportback. The reason is supposed to be that Audi wants to reserve even numbers for purely electric models. The current A6 is also to become the A7 in the future.

The new A5 is supposed to have a smoother design with fewer of the sharp breaks seen on the brand’s current models. However, the design is still rather a matter of conjecture, as the car has not been spotted other than in camouflage foil.

In the same way, the interior is surrounded by questions, but it is supposed to get a free-standing display instead of the current instrument shield in the classic chapel.

The car should continue to stand on the MLB platform and offer petrol and diesel combustion engines. The first ones should mainly revolve around the two-liter EA888, which is also used by a number of other models of the Volkswagen concern, including the Octavia and Golf.

However, the engine is to be significantly modified. It is set to get a new variable vane system in the turbocharger to improve throttle response, as well as a fuel system with higher pressure injectors. It is also supposed to have mild hybrid technology with a 48V electrical system in the basic versions and a plug-in hybrid system in the higher ones.

In terms of diesel engines, the British expect a premium two-liter inline four-cylinder to play under the hood. However, they assume that its presence in the menu will not be as massive as was the custom for Audi until recently. There is no information about six-cylinders here either.

What the sporty S5 will look like, whether it will get a six-cylinder again and whether it will be a diesel engine again, or whether Audi will return to gasoline, is not yet known. Likewise, for now we can only speculate about what will power the top version of the RS4.

If it comes with an internal combustion engine, it will quite possibly be one of the last Audis with anything other than a fully electric drive, as the automaker wants to stop launching new cars with internal combustion engines in 2026.

It is also possible that Audi will come with a fully electric version. The British speculate that if it were a station wagon, it would give the Ingolstadt brand an edge over the competition. This is currently focused on sedans, as can be seen, for example, from the BMW i4 or Tesla Model 3. However, the electric version would not fit on the MLB platform, which does not support the installation of a fully electric system.
