Les Sables-d’Olonne Vendee. 2024: the “New York Vendée” as a prelude to the “Vendée Globe”
.
It’s decided !
The start of the “New York Vendée Les Sables-d’Olonne” will take place on May 29, 2024.
And the “Vendée Globe” will start on November 10, 2024, at 1:02 p.m.
This is what we can call a prelude.
Others will say that this is a last “training” race before the deep end of the Vendée Globe.
It will also be, for those who have not yet met all the qualification conditions – distances covered, for example – the last chance to qualify for theEverest des mers.
Compulsory conditions for the Vendée Globe
Have completed one of these two races without exceeding the winner’s time increased by 50%:
– 1 qualifying race in 2022 or 2023;
– 1 qualifying race in 2024.
In addition, as the Vendée Globe is planned for a maximum of 40 participants, the number of miles will be eliminated by favoring those who have completed the most, and each mile completed during the New York Vendée will be counted as 1.5 miles. We therefore understand why there are so many participants in this last qualifying race! It’s much more than a dress rehearsal, it’s a call from the sea….
In any case, even if the skippers are not quite ready, the City of Sables-d’Olonne and the department of Vendée will be ready for the deadline because, for four years, Vendeans and lovers of boating and major races in wide get impatient…
When will there be a Vendée Globe every three years…??
We know that financial means are needed for such an organization; and you don’t need too frequent departures so as not to disenchant the enthusiasts…. But OK ! This periodicity, every four years, dates from 1894 when Pierre de Coubertin, at the Sorbonne, launched his Olympic Games project in Athens in 1896, then independent Games or Games linked to a universal exhibition, every four years.
It was a time when transportation was long and tedious; working athletes had to be able to free themselves and finance their trip.
Since 1896, all the organizers have modeled themselves on this periodicity, by a simple mimicry.
But the world is going faster today than in 1896…
The deadline is very long for the olympians where the globiens. Even more, psychologically, for those who miss a deadline. They will have to wait and prepare over a period of eight years!
Eight years is almost a lifetime for a top athlete, in sport or boating.
Admittedly, it takes time to prepare, to find sponsors, to finalize all the necessary and/or mandatory deadlines.
But three years would be more than enough and would create an undeniable dynamism in terms of promotion, tourism and image.
The New York Vendée, also every 4 years
But today, it’s New York Les Sables-d’Olonne, the prelude, as we said, of the future Vendée Globe.
The first edition took place in 2016 (created by IMOCA et Open Sports Management) with a victory for Jérémie Beyou over Maître CoQ in 9 days and 16 hours.
The second edition did not take place, in particular due to the health crisis.
The next edition will therefore take place on May 29, 2024.
Eight years will have passed. It’s a long time for this event which has its charm.
Because it creates an original link with the city of New York, an infrequent link, unusual even one could say for the Vendée, while this department is almost opposite New York, but at 5600 km (the race nautical New-York Vendée is 3200 miles).
A race that could be an opportunity to develop fraternal links (twinning), economic, cultural, cinematographic, nautical etc…

.
40 competitors against 14 in 2016
There were only 14 competitors in 2016. There will be around 40 for this second edition which will be organized by the SAEM Vendée Globe, which took over the organization after an agreement with Imoca and OSM.
On May 24, 2024, five days before the race, a nautical show will take place in Manhattan Bay at the feet of the Statue of Liberty called “Liberty Race”.
We have almost a year left to perfect our English in order to be in the front row…

.
The race will take place on May 29, 2024 and the prize giving on June 9, 2024.
