After the David Quinn era behind the gang of the New York Rangers ended at the end of the season, the Rangers have found his successor. The reigning world champion trainer Gerard Gallant will take over the blueshirts.
The 57-year-old Canadian started his NHL head coaching career in the middle of the 2003/04 season when he took over from then General Manager Doug MacLean. But after just 15 games after the start of the 2006/07 season, his adventure as head coach came to an end again – until he took over the Florida Panthers in 2014/15 and was to look after them for two full seasons. But this time also ended after a weak start to the 2016/17 season.
Gallant was finally presented as the first coach of the newly founded franchise of the Vegas Golden Knights and led the Golden Knights in their first season to the Stanley Cup final, so they had to admit defeat to the Washington Capitals 1: 4 in the end. After 49 games in the 2019/20 season, he was replaced by current head coach Pete DeBoer. The 211-time NHL goalscorer took a year off, but led Canada to the 27th World Cup title of the maple leaves at the last World Cup in Riga.
Rumors of an agreement between the Rangers and Gallant have been circulating for a few weeks now, and now these seem to be confirmed. His team also won 270 of his 541 coached games – Gallant becomes the 36th head coach of the prestigious franchise. This leaves the Arizona Coyotes and the Seattle Kraken the only teams without a head coach.
