The New York Public Library (NYPL) will give half a million new books to familiesthis as part of a series of programs aimed at keeping kids and teens interested in reading while school is out over the summer.

Free books are available at all Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island branches, as well as at select outdoor events.

In addition to distributing 500,000 free books, NYPL’s “Summer at the Library” program includes outdoor storytelling, writing and reading exercises, and hundreds of free programs for readers of all ages .

A diverse selection of new books chosen by librarians will be available at all NYPL branches. The books are ideal for children and teens ages 18 and under. Locations will offer titles in Spanish, Chinese, and large print.

“We are particularly excited about this year’s book giveaway. There is evidence that being surrounded by books at home has a positive impact on literacy levels, including readiness for kindergartensaid Brian Bannon, branch director of libraries and education for the NYPL’s Merryl and James Tisch.

“So, in addition to lending millions of books, we’re giving families the opportunity to keep titles in their homes, build their own libraries of learning, and have a deeper connection to the New York Public Library. We look forward to seeing you all at one of our branches soon,” added Bannon.

The library also offers free events and programs for babies and toddlers, teens and adults throughout the summer, from baby shows and podcasting workshops to job search help and citizenship classes.

Outdoor storytime will take place outside of various library branches, as well as in parks, laundromats, and other locations.. The NYPL Mobile Library will also be in various locations this summer, bringing a variety of books to loan to different communities.
