The New York Marathon will fill up with runners again in November

The New York Marathon will return to full capacity this year, with more than 50,000 runners scheduled for the November 6 event, up from 33,000 allowed last year due to Covid, the New York Road Runners announced Thursday.

The annual 42,195 km race had as many as 53,627 finishers in 2019.

But since then, the 2020 edition has been canceled due to the pandemic and the 50th edition of the New York Marathon was therefore finally held a year later, in November 2021, with a gauge limited to 33,000 runners. Only 25,010 runners eventually completed the distance.

“Last year’s marathon was an uplifting and unifying moment for New York City’s recovery, as well as a symbol of renewed hope, inspiration and perseverance,” the race director said. Ted Metellus. “Next November, we will be delighted to once again welcome runners from all over the world to provide one of the greatest days in New York.”

“This race is the strongest proof of New York’s relentless spirit and determination and we are proud to announce that this year we will be back at full capacity,” said the Mayor of New York, Eric Adams. “With 50,000 runners competing in November, the city that never sleeps will also be where champions are forged.”

In 2021, the New York Marathon was won by Kenyan Albert Korir in 2:08:22 for the men, and by his compatriot Peres Jepchirchir for the women in 2:22:39.
