The WNBA is definitely back to cruising speed after the 2024 Paris Olympics took place last night, we’ll give you a quick recap before you head to uncle’s barbecue.
Washington Mystics vs. Minnesota Lynx: 83-99
Napheesa Collier was far too strong in the victory against a weak Washington team that was no longer hiding in the tank. The Olympian added 30 points and 2 steals in 29 minutes, shooting 13/16. Among the Mystics who led in the first quarter before allowing themselves to be outrun for the rest of the game, only Stefanie Dolson (23 points on 100% shooting including 6/6 on points 3) really up to the task.
Las Vegas Aces vs Liberty New York : 67-79
It was the big shock of the night, between Aces and Liberty who had already met in the finals, and it was New York who confirmed their status as the best team of the season thanks to for the Big 3. The Olympians Sabrina Ionescu (23 points) and Breanna Stewart (18 points, 2 steals) were again the most prominent, and Nyara Sabally had a chance to come in as well.
Opposite, A’ja Wilson was a little too isolated (24 points on 8/15 shooting and 100% on 3-pointers, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 interceptions). Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young combined for some 30 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists, 2 blocks and 4 steals: enough for three Olympians. For a double reigning champion, the Las Vegas Aces are still not very satisfied in terms of results (only fifth out of twelve WNBA teams).
Los Angeles Sparks vs. Chicago Sky : 86-90
It was THE somewhat rotten game of the evening, between two of the five worst teams in the WNBA. So let’s make it a really big paragraph. Without a significant statistical improvement in the scoring to be noted, there are no real stars to speak of, but an indecisive match that was decided in the last minutes. After starting the game dominated by Sky, Los Angeles regained a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter. We think they say mass, but the pair of Sky rookies once again pulled the big double card to calm everyone down. Angel Reese (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Kamilla Cardoso (15 points, 14 rebounds) went up until the end of the last quarter to get back in front and defeat the team of Kia Nurse (16 points at 40% too long) and stay alive in the WNBA rankings.
